3 Idiots

Movie:  3 Idiots
Review by Kevin Xalvis (xalviss)

Cast: Amirkhan. R, Madhavan, Sharmanjoshi, Boman irani, Kareena Kapoor
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
To cut a long story short, all you'd like to say about the film is, All izz very, very, very, very, very well. Watch this film to know what it means!. Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams. That's the essence of 3 IDIOTS, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. Let me come to the point right away. There are films and there are more films. And then there's 3 IDIOTS.
3 IDIOTS is Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's third film together, after MUNNABHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, landmark films.
Three actors from the path-breaking RANG DE BASANTI team - Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman - team up yet again. Plus, Aamir's teaming up with Hirani. It couldn't get bigger!
3 IDIOTS is over-hyped and that could be dangerous for any film since it's the expectations which kill a film if the content doesn't match up to the hype. In this case, all izz well!
Now let's demystify the myths...
3 IDIOTS is not about idiots or nincompoops. It's about three engineering students who believe in 'I'll Do It On my Terms' and that's what the three characters achieve in life and that's what Hirani, Chopra, Aamir eventually achieve at the end of the movie. Making a movie on their terms!
3 IDIOTS belongs to everyone. But, yes, there's no denying that Aamir makes you forget all his past achievements as you watch the amazing actor play Rancho. To state that this ranks amongst his finest works would be an understatement. Madhavan is incredible, especially in the sequence when he explains his point of view to his father Sharman he is outstanding from start to end. This was a difficult role to portray and only an actor of calibre could've pulled it off. Boman(virus) is superb as the vicious head of the institute. The scenes between Aamir and Boman are extra-ordinary and it's a treat to watch these two powerful actors clash on the big screen, without getting overdramatic. Boman's appearance, mannerisms and dialogue delivery are exemplary.3 Idiots is for all parents whos forcing there dreams on there childrens much needed in current society trend give a freedom to your childs dream instead of forcing your dreams on them. Give a chance to youngsters All Is Well…

A Beautiful Mind

Movie: A BEAUTIFUL MIND
Review by Mudass Sayeed (sculptured_art)

Cast: Russel Crowe, Jennifer Connelly
Director: Ron Howard
Music Score: James Horner (Who played for Titanic)
At Princeton University, John Nash struggles to make a worthwhile contribution to serve as his legacy to the world of mathematics. He finally makes a revolutionary breakthrough that will eventually earn him the Nobel Prize. After graduate school he turns to teaching, becoming romantically involved with his student Alicia. Meanwhile the government asks his help with breaking Soviet codes, which soon gets him involved in a terrifying conspiracy plot. Nash grows more and more paranoid until a discovery that turns his entire world upside down. Now it is only with Alicia's help that he will be able to recover his mental strength and regain his status as the great mathematician we know him as today.
This movie says how the man should be in his shoes at work, to himself and to the known and unknown people though not about mathematics (chuckles).
Direction is just wow. Mr. Ron Howard (Director) has divided a Hero’s brain in three characters.
(A)  A Friend (who never cares about anyone by being in attitude “I am the ever best”).
(B)  A Small Child (who never cares for anything), and a third one
(C)  A Russian Man (who encourages to do some illegal things)
I think the watchers gonna be Paranoid (a mental condition characterized by Delusions of persecution) soon. Ha Ha!! The way I briefed must have made you rather confusing because it is a science fiction movie. Watch the movie. You’ll feel the sharpness of it. It had bagged lot of Oscars. The BGM, the music director had done more than his best, I could say. It’s a soft movie with good tones. Tears had run like scissors by cutting my cheeks while I was watching the final frames of the movie. It’s a slow running movie though it has lot of things which will make u warm the seat. It’s not a pop-corn movie to watch by chewing it. It’s a pure mind related movie. Watch it…. Guyssssss!!!

Review by Cricraze

Cast: Rowan Atkinson, Tasha de Vasconcelos
Director: Peter Howitt
The movie name given above itself explains the whole movie, yes its one another laughter treat for all movie liker’s. The one of the best spoof movie I have seen in any language. In this movie the comical actor Rowan Atkinson has done the character of a spy agent of England which is actually the world famous James Bond movies. The way he behaves as a spy agent really makes everyone burst out in laughter.
Each and every scene in the movie is filled with the best facial expressions of the best slapstick comedy actor Rowan Atkinson. A movie is full of entertainment and laughter with full of twist and turns in a humorous way. It is a great entertaining movie for all class people.

Million Dollar Baby

Movie: Million Dollar Baby
Review by Kevin Xalvis (xalviss)

Cast: Clint east wood, Morgan freeman, Hillary swank
Director: Clint Eastwood
Beautifully written, superbly directed and excellently acted in, Eastwood's 'Million Dollar Baby' both captivates and involves the viewer in a staggering film experience.
Talent number One - is Paul Haggis, producer and screenwriter. Haggis takes stories by F.X Toole and crafts something that boxing-movie lovers haven't seen before. It doesn't lean entirely on the exhausted underdog cliché ("Rocky") or the 'rise and fall of a star' one either ("Raging Bull").
Talent Number two - And Eastwood's best too. He is an elderly man; some might say too elderly to still be working. After all, most people are retired by his age. But if you had to guess when you're watching this film, you would never, ever say the man is seventy-four. You would say something closer to the sixties, because the man has such amazing energy and dedication, and above all, he has talent. It's been forty long years since "A Fist Full of Dollars" and film has come a long way, and so has this man. At seventy-four, passed all those years as an action hero, nearing what's could be the end of his career, Eastwood has made his best movie. I really, really hope he has time to make many more.
Talent number three - is Morgan Freeman. He could narrate what I did yesterday and it would be considered Oscar-worthy. There is no one better to impart wisdom to an audience and half of why "Million Dollar Baby" communicates its ideas and themes so clearly is because of him.
Maggie needs boxing to make something of herself and gain respect… When she first approaches Frankie, asking to be trained, he told her he never trains girls… She continues to hang around and after much harassment he eventually changes his mind… From there, we begin to feel some natural affinity between the two…To say more would be to ruin a lovely, heartbreaking film carefully layered with surprises…
In the championship fight, Maggie boxes against the current middle weight championship title holder. She is not only aggressive and tough but also fights dirty. She takes a deadly shot at the side of Maggie and sends her landing on her head on the corner stool, breaking her neck. Maggie suffers spinal neck injury that leaves her paralyzed for life. The last 1/4 of the movie is about euthanasia and human morals. Maggie is bed ridden for a long time and eventually has to have her leg amputated due to muscle atrophy and bed sores. She asks Frankie for a favor. She asks if he remembers the story she told him about her father and their dog. She no longer wants to live. She had her shot and wants to die remembering the crowd cheering her name. Frankie refuses. Later Frankie is awoken in the middle of the night. Maggie has bitten her tongue, hoping to bleed to death. The doctors save her and stitch her tongue back up. She rips the stitches out and tries it again. This time they cover her tongue so she can't get to it.
Frankie now realizes how badly she wants to die and contemplates "slowly killing" her by letting her lives or ends her life while she is "living." Scrap tells him that most people die wondering "what if" and never having a chance at anything. He tells him that at least Maggie had her shot of a lifetime and is thinking "maybe I did alright."
Frankie decides to fulfill her wishes and end her life. He walks into her room, unnoticed. He tells her what he's going to do and she can only smile. He tells her that the Gaelic phrase the crowds were chanting and on her robe meant "My Darling". He removes her breathing tube and injects her with adrenaline. She dies instantly.
Beneath "Million Dollar Baby," there is a love story… A deep love story between two people with scars in their lives... Both are haunted by family problems… Maggie's family, led by her opportunistic mother is alternately cruel and exploitative… Frankie has an unloving daughter he writes to constantly, but his letters always returned unopened, unread and intact.
In the end of the movie we see Scrap writing a letter (to Frankie’s daughter) and we realize that the narration all along is this letter. He ends it along the lines of "...He never returned to the gym and I never saw him again. I'm sure he's somewhere between here and there but where ever he is, I'm sure he's doing just fine. I just wanted to let you know what kind of man Frankie was. I wanted to let you know what your father was like."
“Anyone can lose one fight"-Million Dollar Baby
No wonder this film got 4 Oscar for best picture, best director, best actress, best supporting role. Good film to watch.
Cheers

Mamma Mia!

Movie: MAMMA MIA!
Review by Kevin Xalvis (xalviss)

Cast: Pierce Brosnan, Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan SkarsgÄrd
Director: Phyllida Lloyd
The story is a piece of fluff. Sophie, who lives with her mother in a dilapidated hotel on an idyllic Greek island, wants nothing more than for her father to be at her forthcoming wedding. The trouble is her father could be any one of three men with whom her mother dot dot dotted twenty years ago. So Sophie invites all three of them to her wedding and, as expected, complications ensue. The story, such as it is, is quite strong enough to enable the songs to be hooked onto it. And the songs, with one or two obvious exceptions (Money Money Money cued by the rundown state of the hotel) are very cannily worked into the story so that each one is relevant.
The film looks great. The Greek locations overflow with sun and primary colors. The script is mostly fairly deft, and there is a sprinkling of decent laughs.
While the majority of the film is brilliantly silly, Meryl Streep gives us an emotional show stopping performance of 'The Winner Takes It All. Who wouldn't pay to see James Bond singing 'SOS'? Pierce Brosnan was humorously over-emoting everything but it worked perfectly within the context of the film.
But the film ultimately stands or falls - and it stands, believe me! - on two things: the music, and the cast.
The music - sitting through this film brings home the strength of the Abba catalogue. There isn't a weak song among the two dozen which feature on the soundtrack. The music, produced by composer Benny Andersson, mostly wisely sticks very close to the original arrangements, and the occasional divergences (Greek bouzouki on I Had A Dream, for instance) are spot on.
Donna and Sophie (Mother and Daughter) are perfectly cast with an uncanny similarity in both looks and personality. Julie Walters almost steals the whole show, sorry I mean film, with her performance of 'Take a Chance on Me'.
It does take you about 20 minutes to settle down from the excitement of this outstanding cast singing their hearts out. I'm not the biggest 'movical' fan but if go in with an open mind and a bunch of people and you'll leave uplifted and pleasantly surprised.
With just the right amount of eccentricity, heart, and *get out of those movie chairs and DANCE IN THE AISLE* ABBA music, you'll never want this adventure to end.

My Name is Khan

Movie: MY NAME IS KHAN
Review by Kevin Xalvis (xalviss)

Cast: Sharuk Khan, Kajol
Director: Karan Johar

Three of the biggest worldwide Hindi film successes in recent memory--1998's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and 2001's Kabhi  KUshi Kabhi gham, both of which he wrote and directed; and 2003's Kal ho Na ho…which he wrote and directed by Karan johar. Sharukh khan & johar chemistry in real life once again bring them in to success in this movie.
Shahrukh Khan. a young man suffering from autism, he fall in love despite that Rizwan is a Muslim and Mandira is a Hindu. Rizwan’s mother once told him that in life there are only good people who do good things and bad people who do bad things regardless of their religion. Rizwan and Mandira get married and move together into the suburbs and get along with one another until the events of 9/11 transpire thereby increasing the tensions between Hindus and Muslims. After a tragedy occurs, which won’t be spoiled here, Mandira kicks Rizwan out of the house and tells him not to come back until he has told the U.S. President face-to-face that he’s not a terrorist. He now goes on a desperate mission to fulfill his promise.

The entire burden rests on Shahrukh Khan to carry the film and, fortunately, he gives a very charismatic performance that covers a wide range of emotions very convincingly. Moreover, he’s delightfully amusing during the scenes of comic relief which help to lighten the plot’s heaviness. His journeys are not only physical ones but also very spiritual because his experiences help to learn the harsh realities of life and how to overcome them. Well-acted and heartfelt with inspirational, important messages about tolerance, compassion, endurance, hope, honesty and, above all, the power of love.
On the whole, MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerizes, enthralls and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like MY NAME IS KHAN is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don't miss…

Raging Bull

Movie: Raging Bull
Review by Rahul K (rahulimpossible)

Cast: Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty
Director: Martin Scorsese
This movie actually I watched when I was soo young and don’t even know English, and the movie does not require any dialogue to understand, the scene says it all, we can say it was standout movie, you can imagine about how good is this movie is ,when it reached a boy who lives  exactly opposite part of the world that too in a smallest village where no one speaks English.(ya its me only).
Raging Bull is a masterpiece. I don't think many people can dispute that, and if they try, they make themselves look foolish. There are several amazing scenes and sequences, Raging Bull is one of my personal favorites.  The greatest sports movie ever made is called This Sporting Life. Absolutely fantastic movie,
Very moving film with grade A performances and amazing cinematography. I love the scene where the camera follows La Matta to his fight with Cerdan midways thru the movie. The score was wisely chosen by Martin Scorcese as it becomes the theme of the life and times of Jake La Matta. De Niro earned this Oscar not only with his performance but with his commitment to ensure the most accurate depiction of LaMatta is experienced. Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates great film.
I wasn't a huge fan the first time I watched it, but I gave it another chance after people were nagging me about it, and the more I watched it, and the more I learned about it, the more I loved it. Now it's one of my favorite movies.

Roja

Movie: Roja
Review by Auto Karan

Cast: Arvind Swamy, Madhu Bala, Nasar, Janaka Raj
Director: Mani Ratnam
Music Score: A. R. Rahman
An epic movie from the house of Maniratnam, ROJA announced A.R.Rahman's arrival to the world of background music with a bang. A.R.Rahman turned to a celebrity overnight with the movie.
Who can forget Pankaj's role as a terrorist, Nasser as the strict military man and Janakraj as the astrologer.... characters that will stand out in the minds of anyone who have watched the movie.
Everytime we use to see always in all movies hero introduction wit opening song but here small diff heroine introduction with cute song (chinna chinna asai). You never seen in any movie often… Most romantic scene, he take her by closing her eyes and showing a snowy place and a beautiful song ‘Pudhuvellai malai’… Wow no words to tell. I just feel I shd do d same thing wen I marry… Hw many ve noticed tis scene in tis movie i dono, oru wood la ‘kadhal rojava enga ni enga’ nu lyrics eluthi irukum tamil wording la wit background la ARR music vera. OMG!! U feel tat real LOVE…
The my fav and most beautiful touchin scene in the movie is, terrorist vanthu namba national flag eh erikum pothu atha anaikavum athuku background music um (thana nana na)… Lyrics says “Community may vary but virtue is same“, “Place may vary but land is same”, “Language may vary but voice is same”, ”Direction may vary but Land is same”, “Music may Vary but Sound is Same”, Tat is Our INDIA is ONE and ONLY… wowwwwwwww u feel tat nation sprit from ARR…
Best line of d movie is

“Intha vanmuraiyum thuppakiyum vittutu, oru thiviravathi eh illama MANUSANA irungala” …
Finally,

the movie says “Be a HUMAN Than A TERRORIST” if you take it in its raw form did not have an exceptional story. Under anyone else's direction the movie would have flopped. But it was Maniratnam's way of presenting the story that made it fresh and the way in which the characters move in every scene talks about Maniratnam's talent as a great director.
Overall the movie was truly exceptional....

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Movie: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
Review by Kevin Xalvis (xalviss)

Cast: Eli Wallach, Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef
Director: Sergio Leone
Rather than a review of a 30 year old movie, here is my recollection of a 30 year old movie. I watched this movie somewhere in 1992 and since then I was astounded and mad after it. This is because of my father, who introduced me to Western movies and gave me the essence of watching movies with a different perspective... Back in the '95, brilliant, breathtaking, mesmerizing...and like a fine wine, this one just gets better and better. So far ahead of it's time, it blows your mind. "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is one of the greatest movies ever made.
The beginning of the film is so memorable, with the young, rough good-looks of Eastwood being labeled "The Good", the absolutely evil look of Lee Van Cleef being labeled "The Bad", and a dirty, unkempt, desperado Eli Wallach with booze and food flying being labeled "The Ugly". The ending fight scene with its 3-way showdown is one of the most memorable pieces of film I have ever watched.  It’s a matter of fact; nobody speaks until about 10 minutes into the film. It is all visual.

We, the audience, are forced to imagine what the characters are thinking, what might be taking place. Leone gives the viewers a chance to guess what might happen. Even in once Upon a Time in the West, we see his mastery at the No-Dialogue introduction. I also believe that this is his way to introduce the character's personality traits without the viewers actually knowing that they know it. A subtle technique so when they see a character does something later in the movie; the viewers can accept the character's actions.
Three men, three guns, beautiful scenery, high tension, excitement. A work of art. You can almost feel you're there, trying to avoid bullets. The hairs on my arms stand up every time I watch this film, especially during the final scene. Sergio Leone knows how to build a scene.
This is Leone's final western from the trilogy, and clearly the best. Here, he showed all of his directorial techniques, the legendary close-ups, the 10-minutes-of-silence-and-tension scenes and similar. Ennio Morricone's music is absolutely perfect with this film. It's hard to think of a movie with a better soundtrack actually. Every character has its specific tune played with another instrument every time (Man with No Name-flute, Angel Eyes-organ, Tuco-human voice). Clint Eastwood shows us what we'll see from him in the future with his smooth talking, laconic speech, mean looks, and that ever persistent cigarillo in his mouth.

Don’t forget the legendary one-liners he is saying throughout the film such as- Man with No Name: You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig. I laugh every time I see it. Lee Van Cleef gives his best performance here. His little, piercing eyes make him ideal for this role. Eli Wallach is also perfect as Tuco, the nosy bandit who never stops talking and has a key role in the film. Finally, I think everybody should see this film, simply because of its greatness, magnificence and cinematic significance. It defines the word "cool".
Cheers!
